Jewish Federations Praise Increase to NSGP Funding

Jewish Federations commend the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security for passing $360 million for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) for FY 2023. The $110 million increase for the NSGP will help save lives and keep Jewish and other communities safe. We are grateful to Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) and Ranking Member Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), as well as Appropriations Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Ranking Member Kay Granger (R-TX) for their stewardship. We are also grateful to Reps. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) and Michael McCaul (R-TX) for their outstanding leadership in championing NSGP funding and to House Homeland Security Chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) for the consistent support.

The NSGP provides grants to nonprofits to help fund security measures such as inspection and screening systems, physical barriers, and development of emergency preparedness plans. Jewish Federations have called for increasing funding for the program in Congressional Testimony and op-eds as the country has seen increasing violence against houses of worship. Last year, the NSGP was able to fund fewer than half of all applicants.

Jewish Federations, which were instrumental in creating the NSGP in 2004, continue to prioritize communal security, most notably through our LiveSecure campaign to ensure that every Jewish community has access to security resources. Jewish Federations have raised $62 million for the campaign – the largest security campaign in the history of the North American Jewish community.
